Latest #IPv6 measurements show growth in Vietnam

I always like to highlight new operators turning up IPv6 in these regular posts and it’s great that I can do that again this month. VNPT registered with World IPv6 Launch in May of this year and are now growing their deployment rapidly (latest measurements show more than 4% IPv6 deployment). Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group, commonly abbreviated as VNPT, is a telecommunications company, owned by the Vietnamese government, and the national post office of Vietnam. VNPT owns Vinaphone, one of the three largest mobile network operators in Vietnam.

You can view the full listing of newly updated IPv6 network operator measurements for this month.

If you’re a network operator deploying IPv6 and would like to join VNPT and the other networks that make up the ranks of World IPv6 Launch participants, please register your network for measurement.

Happy Launchiversary 2017!

On this, the fifth anniversary of World IPv6 Launch, we wish all our readers a Happy Launchiversary 2017!. It really is staggering how far IPv6 deployment has progressed in five years. In mid-2012, Google measured less than 1% of users accessing their services over IPv6. Today that figure is getting close to 20%. Since World IPv6 Launch, several major operators are now delivering the majority of traffic from major content sources like Google, Akamai and others over IPv6. Individual operators, like T-Mobile USA, have deployed IPv6-only networks for their subscribers.

How much progress have we made in the five years since World IPv6 Launch? All the details are included in a new landmark report from the Internet Society. While you download the report, here are the highlights:

✦  IPv6 has increased 3000% since the beginning of World IPv6 Launch five years ago.

✦  Deployment is occurring around the globe: Measurements show 37 countries exceed 5% of traffic is IPv6 to major content providers.

✦  Over 25% of the Alexa Top 1000 websites are reachable using IPv6.

✦  Some networks are now IPv6-only internally (e.g. JPNE, T-Mobile USA, SoftBank), and some major networks are now majority-IPv6 (e.g. RelianceJIO, Verizon Wireless, SkyBroadcasting, XS4ALL).

✦  Some organizations are in the process of turning off IPv4 within their networks and/or data centers to reduce network complexity and cost (e.g. T-Mobile, Facebook, LinkedIn).

✦  The Internet Society’s core recommendations are to: (a) start now if you haven’t already, (b) use established RFP requirements like RIPE-554: Requirements for IPv6 in ICT Equipment, and (c) take advantage of existing IPv6 deployment information including the Internet Society’s Deploy360 Program.

IPv6 use is set to continue growing for the rest of this year and beyond as more operators start and grow their deployments around the world, and new content and hosting providers enable IPv6 for their customers.

We will continue to publish monthly measurements of IPv6 deployment as the Launch continues around the world. If you’re a network operator deploying IPv6 and would like to join the other networks that make up the ranks of World IPv6 Launch participants, please register your network for measurement.

TELMEX rolls out #IPv6, new data from APNIC

It’s always exciting to see a new operator start turning up IPv6 connectivity for their customers. Recently eyes have been turning to TELMEX, a Mexican telecommunications company headquartered in Mexico City that provides telecommunications products and services in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela and other countries in Latin America. As you can see from the chart below, their IPv6 deployment has been growing rapidly of late.

We are delighted to announce that APNIC are now supporting World IPv6 Launch as a new data source. APNIC recruits random measurements of IPv6 capability and preference through advertisements placed in web sites worldwide. The advert runs specially crafted HTML5/Javascript and measures a range of properties across wired, wireless and cellular networks. Per-Economy and Per-ASN daily totals are calculated through the RIR delegation stats and daily BGP dumps to map origin-as and economy of registration of each tested clients IP addresses. The measurement has run continuously since 2010 and currently collects around 10 million samples per day. Further information is available here.

eircom gets its #IPv6 on

Ireland will soon be firmly established amongst the many countries around the world seeing strong and growing IPv6 deployment. One of the main reasons for that growth has been renewed IPv6 deployment by eircom and we are delighted that they have registered to join the ranks of World IPv6 Launch network operators.

Eircom Limited, trading as eir, is a fixed, mobile and broadband telecommunications company in Ireland, and a former state-owned monopolist. It is the largest telecommunications operator in the Republic of Ireland, with a division to service the business and corporate telecom markets in Northern Ireland and Britain. Eircom’s deployment has started growing again recently and they are currently ranked 96th by our methodology with an IPv6 deployment percentage of 2.61%.

Jio joins ranks of World #IPv6 Launch

IPv6 deployment watchers have been aware of strong growth in India (15.5% according to Akamai, 17.77% according to Google) for some time. One of the main reasons for that growth has been deployment on the mobile network of Jio (Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd.) and we are delighted that they have registered to join the ranks of World IPv6 Launch network operators.

Jio is an LTE mobile network operator in India. Jio’s deployment has been growing over the past year or so, and they are currently ranked fourth by our methodology with an IPv6 deployment percentage of 77.23%.

Liquid Telecom boosts #IPv6 deployment in Africa

Check out our latest monthly installment of IPv6 network operator measurements!

Some highlights to drew to your attention this month include:

In Africa, Liquid Telecom are ramping up their IPv6 deployment in Zimbabwe and Zambia and currently show in excess of 11% deployment.

EE, a major mobile network operator in the UK and a subsidiary of BT, are a new entrant and it will be interesting to watch their deployment grow in the coming months.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the typically relatively slow-growing percentage of Alexa Top 1000 websites currently reachable over IPv6 has seen much more rapid growth recently as a major CDN provider makes IPv6 available by default.

Major Mobile US Networks Pass 50% IPv6 Threshold

In our year-end blogpost in December of 2015 we highlighted the enormous progress that IPv6 deployment had made in 2015 by obtaining aggregated data from our sources for the four major US mobile providers:

– Verizon Wireless (AS22394)
– T-Mobile USA (AS21928)
– Sprint Wireless (AS3651)
– AT&T Wireless (AS20057)

At that time, in aggregate, these providers were delivering 37.59% of their traffic over IPv6 to major IPv6-capable content providers. We suggested then that, “2016 looks set to be the year that IPv6 becomes the dominant Internet Protocol for mobile networks in the US.”

Well folks, we just passed a major milestone. IPv6 is the dominant protocol for traffic from those mobile networks to major IPv6-capable content providers. The graph below shows the progress of the aggregate metric over the course of this year.

IPv6 traffic from US Mobile Carriers

This is really remarkable progress in the 4 years since World IPv6 Launch in 2012, and the growth of IPv6 deployment in 2016 is showing no signs of abating.

Up and to the right – 4 years of #IPv6 growth

It is four years since World IPv6 Launch got started and the progress we’ve seen in IPv6 deployment at all kinds of service providers around the globe has been remarkable.

Countries like Finland, The Netherlands, Brazil, Malaysia, Canada, and the UK have all seen operators make substantial strides in IPv6 deployment showing the truly global nature of the effort.

Aggregate numbers are also impressive: The percentage of users accessing Google services over IPv6 exceeded 12% earlier this month (it was less than 1% four years ago). Similarly the percentage of the Alexa Top 1000 websites that are reachable using IPv6 is now close to 20%.

Some of the greatest IPv6 deployments are now in cellular networks and for a really valuable insight into some of the numbers and ways in which this specific piece of the deployment is happening you must read Erik Nygren’s recent post for Akamai.
