2015 Wrapup – More than 1/3 US Mobile Traffic is #IPv6, and Still Growing

We’ve just published our final IPv6 Launch network operator measurement results update for 2015. What a remarkable year it has been for IPv6 deployment! We’ve seen new deployments from major operators all over the globe like Elion in Estonia, TELUS in Canada, GVT and Vivo in Brazil, KPN, University of Twente and Ziggo in the Netherlands, BSkyB in the UK, SKTelecom in South Korea, Comteco in Bolivia, and Mediacom, Centurylink and Premier Communications in the USA. Check out the earlier entries on this blog for all the highlights.

In 2015 we’ve also seen national IPv6 Launch events in Finland and Norway and major announcements from Apple relating to IPv6 requirements for iPhone Apps.

As a special year-end treat, and to highlight the enormous progress that IPv6 deployment has made in 2015, we’ve obtained aggregate data from our sources for the four major US mobile providers:

– Verizon Wireless (AS22394)
– T-Mobile USA (AS21928)
– Sprint Wireless (AS3651)
– AT&T Wireless (AS20057)

In aggregate, these providers now deliver 37.59% of their traffic over IPv6 to major IPv6-capable content providers. If 2015 has been a remarkable year, 2016 looks set to be the year that IPv6 becomes the dominant Internet Protocol for mobile networks in the US.

TELUS brings #IPv6 to Canada

The latest IPv6 Launch network operator measurement results are now live. This month we introduce a new feature to our rankings: longitudinal deployment graphs for all operators. We used to provide these for the top 10 network operators in our rankings but are now making them available for all networks. Just click on the Participating Network name in the measurement results list to see the longitudinal IPv6 deployment graph for that network.

Just one IPv6 deployment highlight to draw your attention to this month, but it’s a big one:

Canadian operator TELUS is just a few months into their IPv6 rollout but it’s clear from our measurements that they have been busy!

#IPv6 is alive and well in Brazil

We recently published our IPv6 Launch network operator measurement results update for October 2015. We’re currently measuring 288 networks that have measured IPv6 deployment in excess of 0.1%. As always we see continued growth in IPv6 deployment across a large swathe of networks around the globe. Some highlights for this month to draw your attention to:

– IPv6 is on the move in Brazil. Last month we mentioned GVT and this month it’s the turn of Brazillian network operator Vivo (AS10429, 11419, 19182, 26599, 27699) to join our rankings. Vivo are listed with an IPv6 deployment percentage of 1.89%.

SoftBank have been a stalwart of the World IPv6 Launch network operator measurements for many years, but their latest deployment graph makes interesting reading (mouseover the network name in our rankings to see deployment graphs for the top 10). Let’s hope the recent trend continues up and to the right in true Internet fashion.

Brazil’s GVT joins top 10, UK #IPv6 on the up

We recently published our IPv6 Launch network operator measurement results update for September 2015. As always we see continued growth in IPv6 deployment across a large swathe of networks around the globe. Some highlights for this month to draw your attention to:

GVT (AS18881), a major network operator in Brazil, are now in the Top 10 networks by our methodology with an IPv6 deployment percentage of 11.48%.

British Sky Broadcasting (AS5607) have been growing their deployment very rapidly over the last few months and are now reading nearly 10% IPv6 deployment by our metric. IPv6 in the UK looks set to continue on an upward trend in the coming months after BT announced they expect to enable 50% of their subscribers by April 2016, and 100% by December 2016.

Telekom Malaysia joins Top 10 #IPv6 networks

We just published our IPv6 Launch network operator measurement results update for August 2015. As always we see continued growth in IPv6 deployment across a large swathe of networks around the globe. Some highlights for this month to draw your attention to:

Telekom Malaysia (AS4788) are now in the Top 10 networks by our methodology with an IPv6 deployment percentage of 15.36%.

– New entrants this month include Canadian telecommunications firm TELUS (AS852) with 2.85%, US cable provider Mediacom Communications (AS30036) with 6.40% IPv6 deployment, and major US telco Centurylink (AS209) with 0.11% IPv6 deployment.

I’ll also draw your attention to this chart:

Swisscom IPv6 deployment

Swisscom IPv6 deployment

A couple of months back, Swisscom (AS3303) doubled their IPv6 deployment (from ~20% to over 40%) almost overnight. So incremental deployment might make sense if you’re just starting out, but isn’t the only way to get things rolling!
